As a home editor, I see a lot of trends come and go (read: Barbiecore). Yet, as the era of curvy furniture and cozy fabrics rages on, there’s one item that seems to be more in demand than ever: reading chairs. More specifically, comfortable reading chairs that basically beg you to curl up with your favorite book and sip on a hot cup of cocoa.  Curtain Fabric Design

The 30 Most Comfortable Reading Chairs of 2023 - PureWow

That said, there are a slew of new options being released—from contemporary and coastal styles to compact chairs that can fit in the corner of an apartment (or oversized versions that are basically a mini sofa). And while, yes, these releases are certainly gorgeous, it’s hard to figure out how they feel (and ensure you’re not buying a chair that doubles as a concrete slab). So, after hours of digging, I’ve come up with a definitive list of the most comfortable—yet chic—reading chairs on the market, including budge-friendly barrel chairs that start at $200 to designer-favorite swivels, loungers and bean chaises that often splash the pages of Architectural Digest. (Plus, here’s a list of some of our favorite books to go with it—happy Hygge season.)

The 14 Best Sofas for Small Spaces

First on my list is the Adams chair, which is basically the equivalent of a durable, decorative marshmallow. Aside from its tailored silhouette, linen- and velvet-upholstery options and customizable metal plate legs—which will certainly turn (more than a few) heads—it’s the inside materials that have people raving.

With a foam, fiber, and pocket spring-filled seat, it feels supportive and soft without sacrificing the ‘sink into me’ factor (and was designed with durability and longevity in mind). “I bought this chair as a [reading] nook addition and it feels sturdy yet cozy,” one reviewer writes. “I take one cushion off to sit with my feet up, and with both cushions off, I can easily curl up and nap there for hours…The color is [also] a perfect deep teal and the brass legs add a great pop of sophistication.”

Plus, another reviewer adds: “One thing to note is that the chair feels very large. [It can fit two adults with no problem], and though I looked at the measurements ahead of time, it seems to have a bigger presence/feel than expected. Not a con, just something to keep in mind.” The best part? The removable seat and cushion covers make it easy to switch up the fabric whenever the mood strikes.

The one item I couldn’t take my eyes off of while Kelly Ripa was reporting live from her living room? This rustic meets midcentury modern armchair. It’s upholstered with linen-blend performance fabric—which means it’s stain- and spill-resistant—and the solid cane, black Parawood paneling makes it equal parts luxe and livable. More importantly: It’s amply padded with a polyfoam cushions and feathered fill—and the chair’s generous, 31.5-inch size ensures you’ll have plenty of room to kick back and relax. After all, if it’s good enough for Ripa to lounge in, it’s good enough for us, as long as we can justify the splurge. (Psst: See number 23 on this list for a similar style at less than half the price).

Simple, sleek and ultra-cozy, I love how this chair takes a contemporary approach to the traditional leather number from my grandfathers’ den (and the fact that it’s reduced from $540 to $265). It has a deep, 30-inch width that's perfect for snuggling up, and under the seat, it features sinuous springs that’ll give you just the right amount of support as you lounge (and will bounce right back up when you’re done). Plus, it has removable back- and arm-cushions that make tackling stains a breeze. Not to mention that it also comes in four faux-leather finishes, including black, white, gray, navy and camel (my personal fave).

While it might be hard to ignore this chair’s price tag, it’s also impossible to overlook its one-of-a-kind, Hygee design. First and foremost: It features genuine, sheepskin upholstery that’s so soft, it essentially begs you to sit down and relax (or treat it like a non-living pet, your choice). Yet, on top of that, it’s overstuffed with cushy layers of foam and characterized by its voluminous, bearlike shape, which the designer, Flemming Lassen, likened to feeling ‘as warm and safe as a polar bear cub in the arms of its mother in the middle of the ice cap.’

Take it from one reviewer, who writes: “This is the most beautiful piece of furniture I’ve ever bought…Because of the price, I thought about it for a while. But I must say: [This is] a dream chair! It’s soooo beautiful, timeless and cuddly—and beyond comfortable, too.”

It’s also available in six sheepskin colorways, including espresso, green tea, moonlight, off white, sahara and honey—and you can choose between a smoked- or natural-oak wood base. (Psst: be sure to peep number 24 on this list for a budget-friendly dupe).

Ah yes, the famous Eames chair. I recently saw a movie where Adam Pally's character, who had a tattoo of this chair, said something to the effect of: “The Eames chair becomes an obsession once you enter adulthood. You’ll understand when you’re older.” And he’s right: This guy has been a staple of midcentury modern interiors for decades, where its high-grade leather and dark wooden hues can elevate any space. More to the point, the chair is beyond snuggly, where its removable sponge cushions offer a cloud-like feel (which you can swap out over time if it begins to sag). Oh, and did I mention that the price also includes an ottoman?

Perfect for formal and informal gatherings (or a moment of respite alone), this lounge chair set from Vincent Van Duysen’s collaboration with Zara Home is an obvious showstopper. Naturally, I’m loving this linen-blended upholstery, which speaks to all of 2023’s design trends. But on top of that, the sturdy pinewood frame is topped with a thick layer of down and foam—and the removable covers may be washed according to the instructions on the label. It also comes with a wheel-adorned ottoman that’s made from the same, washable fabric. Sure, it’s pricey, but it’s worth noting that the chair is a more affordable option from Van Duysen’s luxury, (non-Zara-collaborated) pieces.

I mean…can we just take a moment to acknowledge how ingenious this chair’s design is? At first, I’d splurge on this design alone, where it features an armless silhouette and performance fabric upholstery in two color options (which, for those who don’t know, is a specially coated textile that’s made to withstand spills, stains, high-traffic areas and seasonal wear).

What's more, it includes an attached, wooden and gunmetal iron cigar table that makes it unlike anything else I’ve seen. That—coupled with the fact that it has chunky foam padding, s-springs on the cushions and a 360-degree swivel base—makes this one an easy sell.

Here, a ‘70s-inspired classic that conjures up the interiors of old New York. It’s a modern take on the upholstered swivel, where you can go with a thick slub bouclé fabric (shown above) or opt to customize the piece with more than 205 textile options to choose from. The main draw, however, is the high-resilient polyfoam cushion, which is topped with poly-fiber for unparalleled cushiness and durability. And on top of that, the chair has an exposed 360-degree swivel base, which is made from a stunning, sustainably-sourced white oak veneer.

“[This chair is] comfortable, stylish and makes a very bold statement in the world of ubiquitous swivel chairs. The fabric is neutral in color and has a lovely yet durable texture,” writes one reviewer. That said, another reviewer warns: “[It’s] a little stiff [at first], but with wear, they [become very], very comfortable.”

Designed with livability in mind, this deep, genuine leather seat takes the ‘relaxed rustic’ trend I’m seeing everywhere to a new level. Aside from its stunning upholstery, it also features a webbed seat construction, combined with foam and fiber fill, so it’s the perfect combination of comfort and support. Plus, it has a kiln-dried oak wood frame with a natural to add to its rural sophistication—and the cushions are anchored to the frame of the chair, so they won’t slide around.

There are two reasons behind why this chair has been blowing up on Instagram: Its retro design is so *right now* and the proportions of the lounger have been intentionally adjusted to offer ergonomic support. This is due to the fact that it’s constructed with multiple-density foam (and lack of a wood/metal frame), which provides a unique, lofty feel—and the shape offers strong support for the back where it conforms to the contours of your body.

One reviewer backs this up, writing: “Such a beautiful and SUPER comfortable chair… I wanted something to make our space a little less serious but still keep in line with modern/adult vibes, and this chair does exactly that. [Plus], I have to mention again that it is so comfortable! There's something about being low to the ground that just, [fittingly], grounds a space. It definitely made our [living room] less stuffy and more inviting. It's also doggo-approved!” Indeed, the microfiber upholstery does more than contribute to its good looks, where the fabric is soft and stain-resistant (so long as you’re sure to spot clean with a concentrated detergent).

Looking to make a statement? This upholstered, one-of-a-kind chair features a (truly) unique aesthetic, where it’s covered in patchworked, recycled denim fabric in various hues and washes. On top of that, however, it’s filled with a foam you can really sink into, and the oversized, 32-inch length makes it the perfect piece to draw some visual interest. “I had been searching for a denim chair and found this. I was concerned that it would be too big, but it will be perfect for my space. Comfortable and nicely made,” writes one reviewer.

Part miniature sofa, part lounger, this exclusive chair from Crate and Barrel is the ultimate oversized number for family movie nights (especially for those with 3+ kids). It features a soft back cushion with a deep, low seat and the slim modern arms provide ample sitting and sprawling space. Add to that the fact that it has a durable, spring-up foundation that supports the cushions (and eliminates sagging)—and the cushions are crafted with soy-based polyfoam down-proof ticking for added cushiness.

“I wanted something where we could curl up as a family, read books together or spend a day home sick. This chair checks the boxes. [It] looks great (not too casual), I love the width (I usually sit sideways in it) and I've been delighted with the durable fabric we chose,” one reviewer says. To that end, many people praised the durability of the fabric (which is available in 198 different options), where one person writes: “I've even spilled coffee on the [Taft cement fabric], and the stain came right out, no problem.”

Then, on the other side of the spectrum, you have an adorable (and affordable) option that’s perfect for apartment dwellers. Not only does the chair feature a compact, 20-inch seat width, but the double padding along the bottom, back and armrests give it a fluffy yet firm feel. “It’s the perfect size for a little sitting area in [my] bedroom—super cute design and extremely comfortable as well,” one reviewer writes.

Plus, another adds: “[It has a] generally modern look that goes with lots of different styles, sturdy build, soft fabric and very comfortable! I love [the chair’s] small footprint, [where it’s compact yet large/sturdy enough to hold a grown man comfortably].”

Next on the list of budget-friendly picks is this rocking chair, which is touted to be ‘hypnotizingly relaxing,’ per the brand. It features thick, supportive cushions that offer gentle support in the right places, and its 25-inch size makes it functional for both large and smaller spaces. Plus, it also has a midcentury modern design with a natural wood-grain finish—and you can choose from five different linen fabric options (which include white, blue, gray, ivory and tan). “I would dream of the day when I would sit here with my baby boy—and [this chair] is now our favorite spot!! Rocks very well and it’s not too soft on the cushions (which is a BIG plus for me!).”

That said, it’s also worth noting one reviewer’s warning: “The back isn’t as high as I’d hoped but still very comfortable for someone my height (5’7”). My husband who is 6’2” does not find it comfortable only because of the back height.”

Can’t swing the luxury sheepskin pick we outlined above? Here’s an alternative barrel chair that’ll spare your wallet. The design features sumptuous sherpa fabric—which is also available in linen and velvet options—and its barreled backrest curves into high armrests, where the wide foam cushioned seat provides ample padding. Take it from one reviewer, who eagerly watched her phone for a Target notification that said the chair was back in stock: “Finally, I was able to get my hands on two of them, and man am I glad I stuck around…they are EVERYTHING. Not only are they literally gorgeous, but they’re soooo soft and comfortable too. I’m obsessed with them. They look very classy, high quality, and expensive.”

With more than 1,800 five-star reviews, I had to know why people were raving over this lounger. “This is an absolutely incredible chaise,” one person writes. “It’s extraordinarily comfortable and the fabric color is vibrant. (I purchased the Sunbrella Canvas Spa…and I’m SO glad!) The chair is big and plush, too.” Mainly this has to do with its S-spring cushioning, which is fiber wrapped in foam for extra fluff. And aside from its comfort factor, it features 51 performance fabric options, which means it’ll withstand spills from kids and dirt from dogs. Take it from another reviewer, who raves: “[This chaise] is so very comfortable [and] roomy. I can fit on it with 2 dogs and not be squished—[and] the cushion is firm yet soft at the same time…[love that I can] put my feet up and sit in it [all at once].”

Yet another Wayfair staple people are loving? This reclining chair, which pushes back to 140 degrees (without levers or buttons required). It features a super soft, genuine leather upholstery (available in 13 colors) and the thick, foam-filled cushions make it one of the most comfortable—and ergonomic—options on this list. Plus, it includes a hidden footrest that pops out when you lean back into the seat.

One reviewer writes, “Perfect! Not too bulky and doesn’t take up the whole room (like other recliners). [The] high back is [extremely] comfortable for lounging and extends all the way out to a lying down position. Leather [quality] is beautiful and so is the color.”

Life hack: PB Teen is hiding a slew of trendy, affordable furniture finds (and this chair is just the kicker). Not only does it nail every category of comfort—from a “soft-as-snow” sherpa fabric and vegan leather exterior—but it also features a high back, sloped arms and a full, 360-degree swivel (so you always have an ideal view). Not to mention that it's reasonably priced (considering that most vegan leather chairs skew upwards of $2,000).

Yes, I’ve listed quite a few leather options above. But if you’re looking for the absolute best, creme de la creme of leather reading chairs, this guy is it. It’s part of Aurhaus’ Walsh collection, where the leather is handcrafted by artisans from around the world and expertly designed to withstand everyday use. Plus, aside from the leather (which comes in concrete and brown finishes), the chair features a no-sag, recycled-steel frame and backrests that are complete with foam poly-fiber padding for stability with a “sink-into” feel. That said, since this is such a *delicate* fabric, it’s worth noting some cleaning instructions from the brand: “spot-clean liquid spills by blotting with clear, mild soap and distilled water. Follow by wiping the area with distilled water. Use a clean, undyed, soft and absorbent cloth. Avoid scrubbing. Allow to air-dry.”

If you’re looking to hop on the bouclé trend—which isn’t going anywhere anytime soon—this nubby, swivel chair is just the ticket (and it also happens to be $200 off). Not only is the fabric made from easy-to-clean polyester, per the brand, but it’s filled with polyurethane foam padding and fiber batting, making the feel just as plush as its upholstery. Plus, it’s super easy to assemble and it features a 360-degree swivel base with wooden arms (making it a standout from other, generic bouclé iterations on the market).

Sure, I love the idea of rattan. But every time I purchase rattan anything, I curse myself days later for failing to account for comfort. Not the case with this guy. While its exterior features a looping, rattan structure that wraps around from arms to back, it also includes a cushioned seat and pillow at back to ensure it feels as good as it looks. Trust: “This is the perfect slouchy lounge chair to take a load off in after a long day,” one reviewer says. “You literally will want to melt into this chair and never move. The comfort I get from this chair is more about the shape rather than the cushions.”

And now for another (deeply discounted) luxury chair that’s too good to miss. First, I love how durable it is—given that this is a delicate fabric—where it’s made from performance fibers with and a no-sag spring system that’s built into the cushions. Plus, aside from their durability, the cushions are extra, extra padded with dense foam where it almost offers a Tempur-pedic-like feel. Oh, and did I mention that you can choose from eight vibrant color options? Not bad for a piece that usually retails for $380.

Comfort and style collide in this slouchy linen chair with French seams. It’s available in five understated fabrics—one of which is a floral option that nails the cottagecore trend—and features a tight back with a loose, wooden seat structure (so it’s just as cushy as it is chic). It’s also finished with ample cushioning, so you'll never want to get up (except when it's time for another cup of tea).

Again, there are a ton of sherpa options above. So, what makes this one stick out from the rest of the herd (aside from the fact that you can pick it up in-store, already assembled)? The chair is covered with luxurious, faux-shearling upholstery—which looks way more expensive than its $300 price tag—and the wingback style with tufted detailing adds to its elevated appeal. Plus, it also features a generous 35.6-inch size and the padded seat cushion is lightweight and supportive at the same time.

One person writes: “I've been in love with teddy/sherpa clothing and decor for years, and have finally found the perfect reading-corner sherpa chair! … I'm 5'3" and there is plenty of room in this chair for me to [curl] my legs up underneath me. [Other luxury brands] sell a VERY similar chair for $1099+, so this Threshold version is an amazingly affordable dupe!”

Here, another dupe you should definitely have on your radar. As we mentioned above, this chair is strikingly similar to the one is Kelly Ripa’s home, where it showcases the same, sloped wooden silhouette with woven cane side panels and linen upholstery. Plus, since it’s fit with pillow-back cushions on the seat and backrest, you can sink in when you’re seated and fluff ‘em back up when you’re done.

“[This chair] completely lights up my living room with its charm. Perfect accent piece [with luxurious] looks. [It’s also very] comfortable, where the thick cushioning is super soft in the back [and beneath].” That said, they also note: “[Beware]:  The jute smell from the cane doesn't go away for almost 15 days.”

Alright, eclectics, this one goes out to you. Not only am I obsessed with this chair’s crisp, cotton upholstery, but the vibrant floral design makes it the ultimate statement piece. “These chairs (I got two!) look great and were of excellent quality. I originally bought one to put in my office, and liked so much, I had to get another to keep at home. Soft, comfortable, sits lower that office/dining chair and easy to assemble,” one person writes. Plus, it also comes with a spring seat suspension, foam and fiber fill and acacia wood legs that add durability to its lasting style.

Low-slung and swanky, this about as comfortable you can get in a curvaceous reading chair. It’s filled with high-density foam that feels supportive and soft, and you won’t be able to keep your hands off its white bouclé upholstery. Plus, at the bottom of its organic modern shape, it includes non-marking, round black feet that won’t scratch up your floors, per the brand. (Just be sure to read up on how to clean bouclé, as you’ll want to make sure to care special care of this guy’s white fabric).

“As a tired mom-of-two, [I was] quite eager for a soft place to rest my behind. As such, I decided to see if the [Moon Pod] lived up to the hype and did so by putting [it] to the test. Spoiler: I’m obsessed,” writes PureWow contributor Emma Singer, after awarding this beanbag 91 points out of 100 in a PureWow100 review. “There’s something truly heavenly about sitting in this bean bag, which is filled with foam pellets that perfectly conform to your body and can be adjusted to any position—be it lying down for a snooze or sitting upright for your tenth Zoom call of the day. In fact, you could even say that the comfort level of this ergonomic bag is through the roof.”

She also writes: “The sleek shape and multiple color options (moon indigo, cosmic ash, space gray, Neptune blue and rose quartz) do make this particular bag less of an eyesore than many other options on the market. You won’t be making the front page of any design magazines with this one, but I do think that the Moon Pod has a sort of modish vibe that blends well other furniture.”

Need something for your ocean-view reading nook (we should all be so lucky)? This guy is deceptively luxurious, given its $322 price tag, where it features a linen-looking fabric (made from 100 percent polyester) and spindle details that make it seem like it’s right out of Serena and Lily’s catalog. The cushions feature dense foam padding to keep things stable and sturdy, while the inner coil springs provide a bounce-back feel that’ll help prevent things from sagging over time.

“These were an amazing dupe for much higher-priced chairs,” one reader says. “I loved the color and they are very sturdy,” and another person adds: “I can’t believe how beautiful and high-end this looks [for the price]. Easy to assemble, comfortable and very sturdy.”

Now for a reading chair you can take with you outside. First, let’s address its egg shape, which has a 50-inch width to give you plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy a book (or happy hour beverage). Then, aside from its oversized fit, it features an all-weather, wicker cage construction with DuraSeason Fabric cushions, which repel water, resists fading and are easy to clean.

As for comfort, one reviewer writes: “[This chair is] bigger than it looks online, it comfortably fits two average-sized adults or four kids. Think of it as an outdoor loveseat. The cushion is soft, comfortable and stays put! Love it!” That said, another reviewer says, “The cushion is not paper thin, but it’s not very plush either, so you may need to add an extra cushion underneath the seat if you don’t want to feel the chair frame under your sit bones.” Good to know.
